Maggie’s Past Comes Back To Haunt Her

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the final two episodes of Sullivan’s Crossing season 3.

The Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 finale came with the usual romantic drama and one shocking revelation that led to a cliffhanger ending. The storyline with Glenn threatening to develop land and destroy the Crossing’s business was cleared up a few episodes ago, clearing a path for the final two episodes of Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 to focus on romantic drama and Edna’s health scare.

Aside from the usual romantic melodrama, Suliivan’s Crossing season 3’s story spent a large part of its time focusing on Edna’s health issues. She’d slowly been going blind the past few episodes, and the final two episodes, which were aired back-to-back in Canada, found her getting a shocking diagnosis from Maggie: she had a brain tumor. It was benign, but she would stay blind and suffer other complications without a risky surgery that could kill her.

After initially refusing, Edna finally relented and agreed to have the surgery, but only on one condition: Maggie would be the one to perform it. Despite her doubts, Maggie agreed, and even though there was a dicey moment in the surgery, it was ultimately successful, and the final episode of Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 found Edna on the mend and newly content with her simple life with Frank.

Sullivan’s Crossing was renewed for season 4 in early June 2025.

Elsewhere, that surgery caused problems for Maggie and Cal. Cal saw how much being back in the operating room meant to Maggie and he started to worry that she would eventually regret choosing to stay in Timberlake with him over her career as a neurosurgeon. Maggie ultimately realized that she could be a practicing doctor and still be with Cal, as that’s all she really wanted.

Just when it seemed they’d have a happy ending, however, the finale ended on a shocking cliffhanger that promises trouble for Sullivan’s Crossing season 4. Liam, an old flame whom Maggie described as “a summer fling,” showed up during the grand opening party for Rob’s restaurant and dropped the bomb that he was Maggie’s husband. Cal was understandably shocked and Maggie horrified, and that’s where the season ended.

Why Maggie Didn’t Tell Cal She Was Married To Liam

It’s Possible She Didn’t Know Or Remember

The biggest question from the Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 ending is, of course, why Maggie didn’t tell Cal she was married to Liam. For that matter, it’s worth wondering why nobody else seemed to know she had been married to Liam, either, considering none of them mentioned it in the past three seasons. At the very least, one would expect that her own father would have brought it up during the whole engagement to Andrew storyline of season 2, but he didn’t, which suggests he was also unaware.

After Sullivan’s Crossing Season 2, Maggie Can NOT Regress To This One Habit In Season 3

Maggie needs to keep moving forward in Sullivan’s Crossing season 3, instead of the story taking her back to old habits she has outgrown.

That could hold the answer to the question of why Maggie kept Liam’s existence from Cal: she didn’t actually know or remember they’d been married. Maggie mentioned earlier that Liam had been a summer fling. It’s possible that their marriage was a crazy Las Vegas night she doesn’t remember (though that doesn’t exactly sound like Maggie).

Another option could be that it was a brief mistake she thought was annulled. In any case, Maggie seemed to be just as shocked as Cal when Liam showed up and announced he was her husband, so he clearly wasn’t someone she’d been expecting back in her life.

Who Will Take Care Of The Crossing With Sully Gone

He’s Gone With Helen To Ireland

In a surprising twist, Sully announced he’d be going with Helen on her extended trip to Ireland. He’d been putting it off, but when she showed up on his doorstep to tell him he needed to let go of the past and live, he realized she was right. Maggie was understandably surprised, as Sully has never really left the Crossing before.

It’s not clear if Sully will not be absent for part of Sullivan’s Crossing season 4, if next season will follow split settings in Timberlake and Ireland, or if there will be a time jump and the season will pick up after he’s returned. Considering the Liam bombshell, it’s unlikely that next season will begin with a time jump, meaning Sully will be away from the Crossing for a while.

Sully’s decision to leave the Crossing in the hands of others shows just how much he’s grown in the past few seasons.

It’s also not great timing, considering Edna is still getting back on her feet after her brain tumor surgery, and Frank is helping her while she recovers. Maggie ultimately decided to stay in Timberlake, so she can certainly help, but Sully didn’t know that at the time. His decision to leave the Crossing in the hands of others shows just how much he’s grown in the past few seasons.

Will Rafe & Sydney Break Up?

It Would Honestly Be A Relief

Rafe listens while standing by the fire truck in Sullivan's Crossing

The Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 finale left a big question mark hanging over Sydney and Rafe’s relationship. Sydney never wants to get married, while Rafe does, and the last scene between them involved Rafe telling Sydney they should sit down and talk about it the following day. The look on his face hinted that he’s decided to end it, knowing that they want different things.

If they break up, fans will likely not be upset about it as relationship has been an ongoing source of annoyance for many. Rafe and Sydney have never been a good match, mostly because of Sydney. Her flighty nature and immaturity have been a constant source of frustration between them, and she still has a lot of growing up to do. At this point, it would be for the best if they broke up.

Why Edna Was Really Scared Of Getting Surgery

She Has A Fear Of Aging & Mortality

The other major storyline of the last few episodes involved Edna’s blindness and subsequent diagnosis of a brain tumor. She was terrified and Frank heartbroken, which is why it was so strange that she refused to have surgery. Her explanation was that should something go wrong during the risky surgery, and she should die or become a vegetable, Frank would never be able to handle it.

That reasoning made absolutely no sense, however, as the implicit understanding was that if she didn’t have the surgery, she’d be blind for the rest of her life and potentially suffer other serious complications. Choosing certain, slow decline over a surgery that came with a risk, but would certainly save her, was a decision rooted in feeling, not logic. It didn’t seem like a decision the pragmatic, practical Edna would make, but it’s actually not a surprise.

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3’s Lichen Story Is About To Prove Something I’ve Thought For 2 Seasons Now

Glenn’s revenge for Sully asking the NESA to investigate will be Sullivan’s Crossing season 3’s big conflict – but it never needed to happen.

In the past few seasons, Edna has shown a fear of aging and presumably of death. When she started experiencing symptoms of menopause, she didn’t handle it well at all. In fact, she initially wanted to pretend that it wasn’t happening so she didn’t have to face her own aging and mortality. With death staring her in the face, the logical decision-making process of Edna’s brain just shut down.

The Meaning Of Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Ending Explained

It’s All About Finding Your Chosen Path In Life

The overall theme of Sullivan’s Crossing, including the season 3 ending, is figuring out who you are and choosing your own path in life. This played out through every major storyline in the finale. Rafe and Sydney, it seems, are not willing to compromise who they are and what they want from their future for each other, a decision that Rafe, at least, would not have made before.

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Is Handling Its Mental Health Storyline In A Way I’ve Rarely Seen On TV

Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 is handling its mental health storyline in a sensitive, nuanced manner that I’ve rarely seen on TV before.

Maggie finally realized that what she really wants isn’t necessarily to be a neurosurgeon, but simply to be a doctor in general and help people. Her epiphany led her to realize she could have both of her loves in Timberlake: Cal and being a doctor. She can continue to help others while not having to sacrifice her relationship, finally putting to rest a three-season-long question.

Sully chose to let go of his fear of finding love again and step into the future with Helen. Helen, meanwhile, put her heart out there and showed up on Sully’s doorstep to ask him to come with her, making herself vulnerable as she laid her cards on the table. So did Rob, as he finally asked Jane to officially be his girlfriend, a huge step on his journey of healing after the death of his wife.

How The Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Finale Sets Up Season 4

The Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 finale set up multiple storylines for season 4. Obviously, the biggest storyline is the shocking plot twist of Liam showing up in Timberlake and announcing that he was Maggie’s husband. It’s bound to cause lots of friction between her and Cal, or possibly even break them up. It also sets up a love triangle, though it would be redundant to do that again right after resolving the one with Andrew.

Of course, there will be the other ongoing romance storylines: Rafe and Sydney’s potential breakup, Sully and Helen falling in love, Rob and Jane going strong, even Lola and Jacob potentially starting a long-distance relationship. Season 3 saw the launch of multiple new relationships, and Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 is certain to continue them.
