Prime Video’s 2-Part The Boys Predecessor Is Quietly One Of Its Best Superhero Shows

When The Boys debuted on Prime Video in 2019, it immediately set itself apart in an entertainment landscape dominated by Marvel and DC superhero shows and movies. For audiences growing tired with recycled plots and overused tropes, The Boys flipped the script with ruthless precision. Its brutal violence, biting satire, and deeply flawed characters offered something that felt genuinely new.

However, while The Boys rightfully earned its place as one of the most talked-about shows of the last decade, it wasn’t actually Amazon’s first dive into superhero satire. Three years earlier, the platform had already tested the waters with The Tick, a quirky, offbeat adaptation of Ben Edlund’s cult comic. At the time, it arrived with far less fanfare, but it showcased many of the same instincts that would later make The Boys a phenomenon.

At its core, The Tick is a comedic take on the superhero genre, following Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman) and the mysterious Tick (Peter Serafinowicz) as they navigate a world where costumed vigilantes are more absurd than inspiring. Though it only ran for two seasons, the show remains one of Prime Video’s most underrated gems. Living in the shadow of The Boys, it’s still a must-watch, especially for fans who love the sound of a show that approaches similar ideas from an entirely different angle.

The Tick Mastered Superhero Satire Years Before The Boys

The Tick and Arthur

It’s easy to assume that The Boys was the first Prime Video show to truly deconstruct superhero stories, but The Tick had already perfected a very different kind of satire by the time it ended in 2019. Premiering in 2016, Amazon’s The Tick quietly built a reputation as one of the sharpest comedic takes on the genre, even if it never reached mainstream popularity.

What makes The Tick so effective is its commitment to absurdity without losing sight of emotional grounding. Arthur is not a typical hero; he’s anxious, uncertain, and often overwhelmed by the chaos around him. His partnership with the endlessly optimistic Tick creates a dynamic that constantly pokes fun at traditional superhero archetypes.

Unlike many comedy superhero parodies that rely on surface-level jokes, The Tick understands the genre deeply. It exaggerates familiar elements like secret identities and dramatic monologs until they become inherently comedic. Yet beneath the humor lies a genuine affection for superhero storytelling, and this emotional core keeps the satire from feeling cynical.

Unfortunately, the success of The Boys has overshadowed The Tick. While The Boys is often credited with pushing superhero satire into the mainstream, The Tick had already laid much of the groundwork. Its cancellation after two seasons feels especially disappointing in hindsight, as it represents a bold, inventive take that deserved a much wider audience.

The Boys And The Tick Approach The Same Theme From Different Angles

While both The Tick and The Boys are pitch-perfect superhero satires, they deconstruct the genre in fundamentally different ways. The Boys takes a grounded, almost disturbingly realistic approach, imagining a world where superheroes are corporate assets controlled by Vought International. The world of the show feels alarmingly plausible, with the treatment of superheroes as products and their dominance of society hitting incredibly close to home.

In contrast, heroes in The Tick exist alongside everyday people, but without universal admiration or obsession. The general public in The Tick’s world doesn’t idolize heroes. In fact, they’re often annoyed by them, seen by many as a nuisance not too dissimilar to traffic or bad weather.

The difference in execution highlights two equally effective critiques. The Boys mirrors the dominance of superhero media by creating a world entirely shaped by it. Meanwhile, The Tick captures the perspective of viewers who have grown tired of the oversaturation of superhero content. By portraying superheroes as bizarre disruptions rather than cultural icons, it flips expectations in a subtler but equally insightful way.

Despite their contrasting tones, both shows succeed in delivering grounded, intelligent satire. The Boys uses brutality and realism to expose the darker implications of superhero stories, while The Tick leans into earnest absurdity to highlight their inherent ridiculousness. Together, they represent two sides of the same coin, with each lambasting the genre in wildly contrasting, but equally compelling, ways.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
